RORY McILROY SUFFERS TENDON INJURY

12th August 2011

An MRI scan revealed Rory McIlroy had strained a tendon in his right wrist during his first round at the USPGA Championship in Atlanta, but he intends to play on.

Northern Ireland's US Open champion seemed to hurt the tendon and also his right forearm when striking an iron against a tree root on the third hole.

He still managed an even-par 70 at Atlanta Athletic Club but was seven shots off the blistering pace set by world No 4 American Steve Stricker.

After his round, McIlroy said: "I'm going to go and get an MRI scan now and see there's no damage done to it.

"It was dangerous. I thought maybe the tree root was a foot in front of the ball and thought if I could make contact with the ball and let the club go I could get away with it.

"In hindsight I would have been better to chip out sideways and still get a five. But it was a shot where I thought if I took it on and pulled it off it could have saved me a shot."

A spokesman for McIlroy's management company said after the scan: "The initial diagnosis shows that Rory has strained a tendon in his right wrist.

"He will obviously rest it tonight and he will see how it feels in the morning on the range."

McIlroy is due to tee off at 8.35am local time (1.35pm BST) in the second round.
